This is a horse bell.
This is a bell called "Barei" used to adorn horses. It is from the Meiji to Taisho era. It is a piece of equipment for horses plowing fields. The kanji on the brass part reads "Kichi," which conveys auspicious meanings such as good fortune. Horses were valuable, and in times without agricultural machinery, it was common to lend horses to neighbors. The crepe fabric craftsmanship and hanging decorations are very charming. This is an auspicious decoration also used in celebrations such as the Doll Festival (Hinamatsuri).
